The EARDA Phase I and II projects facilitated Elizabeth City State University, an historically black college and university, to establish the Office of Sponored Research (OSR) in the areas of Biomedical and Behavioral Sciences under the leadership of an experienced Extramural Associate, Dr. All A. Khan. Through this office, the University developed fundamental sponsored research activities. The grants provided funding to develop infrastructure, support for OSR personnel, and to purchase the necessary equipment to carryout the successful implementation of the goals and objectives of the project. With the proposed EARDA (SRIP) Transition Award, the University seeks to enhance and strengthen the activities initiated during Phase I and Phase II through the involvement of its minority and underrepresented faculty and students in research in health-related sciences. The specific objective of this proposal is to enhance the research capacity of ECSU by providing support for the continuation of the following activities: (1) promote faculty opportunities to conduct biomedical and behavioral research and engage in research training; (2) develop skills for faculty and students in the fundamentals of preparing research grant applications, research contract proposals, and training grant and fellowship applications; (3) aid in developing collaborative and consortium arrangements with research intensive institutions; (4) assist in increasing student participation in research; (5) assist in effectively guiding students towards careers in science and research; and (6) establish and develop the technology needed to gain access to Federal and non-Federal resources that provide funds to support biomedical and behavioral research and research training programs.
