Abstract

This is a request for an ADAMHA RSA. The candidate proposes to join the Department of Psychology at the University of California at Berkeley and to devote full time to research. The broad objective is to facilitate and improve the candidate's research and enable his continued growth as an investigator by virtue of the elimination of all non-research responsibility, the betterment of the intellectual environment, and the opportunity to interact and collaborate with several outstanding scientists at Berkeley. Research on five separate though related topics is proposed all of which are extensions of themes that have developed during the candidate's career. These are: Attention and Level of Processing in Perceptual Organization; Perceptual Reversal; Imaging and Perception; Orientation and Form; Viewer vs. Object-Centered Perception.
The specific aim of this research is to advance our understanding of these topics in particular and of visual perception in general. It is assumed that such advances of basic knowledge will have useful ramifications for the field of mental health.
