I_ Principal InvestigatodProgram Director (Last, first, middle): Reidy, Michael Frank 5. A. Description of Institutional Environment The Pulmonary and Critical Care Division at Duke University Medical Center is an ideal setting for Dr. Reidy to pursue his training as an independent investigator. The division has a large number of very good, relatively young investigators who started their careers in a manner similar to that which Dr. Reidy has proposed. These individuals have been able to obtain independent funding for their studies at the appropriate time in their careers and to establish independent areas of research. The division has strong ties with basic science departments, as evidenced by Dr. Wright's involvement with this proposal. Dr. Wright is an outstanding scientist and educator. Dr. Wright's laboratory has consistently produced the highest quality work in the field and will prove an ideal training ground for Dr. Reidy. Dr. Reidy also has available to support him the full scientific and educational resources of the Department of Cell Biology. Furthermore, the studies outlined in Dr. Reidy's proposal will take place in the environment of multiple highly successful investigators who have extensive funding from the NIH, the VA, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. These resources will serve as essential infrastructure to support the career development of Dr. Reidy.
