This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Hypothesize that switching protease inhibitors (PIs) to atazanavir/ritonavir (ATV/r) from lopinavir/ritonavir (LOP/r) will result in direct increases in glucose uptake in muscle and visceral adipose tissue in association with improvements in overall whole body insulin sensitivity compared to remaining on LOP/r. We will complete a prospective randomized trial of 16 HIV infected patients who have been on the same ARV regimen containing LOP/r for at least 6 months and who will be randomized to either switch to a regimen containing ATV/r or remain on LOP/r for 6 months.
