This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This protocol investigates teh role of a low fat vs a low carbohydrate weight loss approach on rates of weight loss, regional body fat composition, insulin senstivity of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, and energy expenditure. Initial results are quite striking. Weight loss appears to be significantly faster on the low carb diet consistent iwth recent reports. In addition, we are seeing reductions in visceral fat stores in both groups. Total body fat composition, and insulin sensitivity and energy expenditure measurements are currently in progress.
