This new 3-year contract (competitive, small business set-aside) will continue the secondary analysis activities currently being performed through an existing contract that will end in September 1993. The purpose of the project is to analyze and summarize data from multiple epidemiological studies related to the prevalence, etiology, and consequences of drug abuse. These analyses promote understanding of drug- related behaviors and risk factors, and can provide information for development of public health measures for prevention and treatment. Currently, the project is analyzing data from several epidemiological studies, including the National Longitudinal Survey of Labor Market Experience of Youth (NLSY) to determine etiologic factors in relation to marijuana and cocaine initiation between 1984 and 1988 and the 1988, 1990, and 1991 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA) to explore characteristics of dependent and nondependent past year cocaine and marijuana users in relation to treatment need and use of services. The new contract will involve new analytical studies of these datasets and of other datasets, including the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area Drug Study, the Drug Abuse Warning Network, and qualitative data from ethnographic studies of drug abuse.
