Under this contract, the Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) of the Institute of Medicine (IOM), National Academy of Sciences (NAS), would study the opportunities for research and training in the nutrition and food sciences and the application of nutrition research to programs in public health. The objectives of this study are: (1) to identify the most promising research opportunities and the means to enhance research in the nutrition and food sciences; (2) to examine the organizational structure and quality of nutrition training and propose recommendations for improving them; and (3) to assess and propose mechanisms for facilitating the application of nutrition knowledge to clinical and public health programs and nutrition policy. A multidisciplinary committee would be appointed to study the topic described above and to prepare a report. The period of performance of this contract will be two (2) and one-half (1/2) years.
