The clinic protocol incorporated core assessments of body composition (measured with both dual energy x-ray absorptiometry and with computerized tomography (the latter partly supported by National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at baseline), strength, and function, targeting higher level functioning. Based on current statistics for death rates and clinic attendance, we expect that about half the cohort will participate in the Year 10 examination. The mean age of those participants will be close to 80 and about 34 percent of those participants will be African American.
