This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.INBRE funds support two major initiatives at Bates College, both with the goal of strengthening faculty and student/faculty biomedical research. First, a Director of Faculty Research and Scholarship has been appointed, a position that has grown out of the Grants Administrator position originally described. The Grants administration portion of this position associated with INBRE-related research and research training is funded by INBRE and the expanded duties are paid by Bates College. This new appointment assists faculty in identifying and obtaining competitive external funding for Biomedical and Behavioral research with the goals of increasing the number of faculty applicants and the numbers of successful applications.Second, we have used INBRE funds to develop a shared research facility called the Bates College Imaging and Computing Center, a new core for faculty and student research. The facility provides us with research capabilities we were previously lacking in genomics, microscopy and the visualization of science. Importantly, the Center is not located in any one department, but in a new facility at the center of campus, where it will maximize opportunities for use and for collaboration across the science departments and across all disciplines. We have used our INBRE funds to purchase equipment for the center. INBRE support allowed us to obtain additional support from two private foundations to do a complete renovation of the first floor of Coram Library, one of the architectural gems of Bates campus. Built in 1902, Coram is located at the center of campus, in a perfect place to bring all of the sciences together, between Carnegie Science Building (which houses Biology, Physics and Geology), Dana Chemistry Building and Hathorn Hall (home to the Mathematics Department). We are pleased to be able to bring Coram back into the center of campus life, connecting our past with new technologies for the twenty-first century. The center opened in January 2007.
