This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Peromyscus Genetic Stock Center and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering are developing PeroBase, a database for the North American rodent genus Peromyscus (http://wotan.cse.sc.edu/perobase/). The database is founded on the experience of the Stock Center personnel in providing animals and information to the diverse range of researchers studying the biology of Peromyscus. Publications on the taxon easily number over 10,000, beginning with work in the 19th century and continuing into the present (over 1300 in the last 5 years). Interest in Peromyscus spans the range of disciplines including systematics, genetics, reproduction, behavior, evolution, and physiology; additionally, the species has much potential for developing into a major model for studying the genetics of adaptability and speciation. There exists a clear need for an extensive, readily accessible, interconnected information base for Peromyscus in view of the importance of these animals and the continuing interest in them.
