This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This project is for upgrading the SMB beam lines at SSRL to enable users to take benefit of the SPEAR3 accelerator upgrade, which will increase the current to 500 mA, lower the emittance while maintaining the long beam life times. All parts were readied for installation on beam line 7. At the end of the run in early August 2005, a rapid disassembly of the entire old beam line took place and the installation of the new equipment commenced. All in-alcove equipment was installed before the start of the FY2006 run, and the focus shifted to building of hutches and readying infrastructure. It is expected that this phase of the BL7 installation will require the month of January followed shortly thereafter by the commissioning of the new beam lines 7-1 for crystallography and 7-3 for x-ray absorption spectroscopy.
