This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.There are both formal and informal parts to the training done by BioCAT. Formal activities in the last two years involved lectures on fiber diffraction and solution scattering in the ACA crystallography summer school (Irving, Orgel) which is held at IIT every July. We also intend to continue participating in hands-on workshops as part of the annual APS XAFS summer school (Barrea). In 2007 a Fibernet/BioCAT fiber diffraction workshop was held as part of the Denver Diffraction Conference.. These workshops provide the primary forum to provide high-level training/dissemination to prospective users of the BioCAT fiber diffraction facilities as well as introduction to advances in fiber diffraction analysis tools. Students and post-docs in Prof Irving's and Orgel's laboratories, because of the ready access to the facility, have a unique opportunity to be trained as future leaders of their fields. One recent Ph.D. graduate from IIT, Dr. G. Farman, continues to be very active in muscle fiber diffraction on the basis of his training and has continued with collaborations developed in the Irving lab. Ms. Tanya Bekyarova, a current graduate student in Prof. Irving's laboratory is now participating in virtually every muscle experiment giving her an exceptional education in muscle biophysics that also provides invaluable contacts for her later professional life. Likewise Dr. Shiamalee Perumal (who just left IIT for U. Michigan, Ann Arbor) and Ms. Olga Antipova in the Orgel lab have participated in a number of wide-angle fiber diffraction experiments with outside user groups accumulating similar experience and contacts.
