Abstract

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Objective: UNAIDS estimates that there are 35-40 million people infected with HIV. Heterosexual transmission of HIV continues to spread this epidemic to an estimated 3-4 million people a year. Development of acceptable female controlled strategies, including microbicides, is a high priority for national and international agencies. The SIV/rhesus macaque vaginal transmission model has been used to test anti-HIV microbicides.
