Renewed funding for the training grant supporting the Chemistry-Biology Interface Pre-doctoral Training Program (CBI-TP) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is requested. Since its inception in 1993, the CBI-TP has served to catalyze interactions between students and faculty interested in research problems at this dynamic interface. Participating programs include Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Comparative Biosciences, the Genome Center, Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Plant Pathology; 29 faculty members from these programs will serve as trainers. During the past grant period, additional opportunities for interdisciplinary training at the chemistry-biology interface have been enhanced through the recruitment of new faculty members with research programs at this interface, the establishment of the Keck Center for Chemical Genomics, and the construction of new facilities for many of the core departments. For the next funding period, several new programmatic features are proposed. Two new courses will be offered to provide graduate students with a foundation in concepts at the chemistry-biology interface and a view of the current state-of-the-art (Chemical Biology and Chemical Biology Seminar). A spring banquet and poster session that includes former trainees as speakers will be held to provide a mechanism for trainees to present their research and to interact with successful former trainees in academia and industry. In addition, trainees will do an industrial internship so that students can experience research at the chemistry-biology interface in diverse settings. This program will continue to provide CBI trainees with unique opportunities that will prepare them for leadership roles in academia and industry.
