EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. This is an initial application for a Short-Term Dental Student Research Training Program. The trainees will be dental students at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Funds are requested for support of 12 trainees for a three-month training period each. Trainees are selected on a competitive basis from research applications developed in conjunction with a faculty mentor. Selection will be made by a faculty Executive Committee on the basis of the strength of the science and potential for a positive research experience. The ability of the selected mentor to serve as a positive role model and to provide a supportive research environment for the student are critical for completion of the goals of the scientific proposal and to also achieve the goals of the training grant. Mentors are selected from research areas encompassing the strongest research programs at the University of Pittsburgh which have ongoing research collaborations with dental school faculty. The five research areas include: Oral Cancer Tissue Engineering Public Health/Epidemiology Genetics Infectious Diseases and Microbiology The primary research training facility will be the research laboratories of the mentors selected. Mentors have been selected for their ability and willingness to provide research infrastructure and resources needed for projects. In addition to the resources available in the mentors' laboratories, additional facilities are available from the many research core facilities present at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
