In this proposal,theCaliforniaDepartmentof HealthServices(CDHS), the Universityof California,Berkeley Schoolof PublicHealth(UCBSPH), selectedlocalandcountyhealthdepartmentsa, ndotherpartnersrequestan additionafliveyears of supportfortheCaliforniaEmergingInfectionsProgram(CaliforniaEIP),whichwas establishedin 1994withsupportfromthe Centersfor DiseasecontrolandPrevention(CDC) andre-fundedin1999.We proposeto implementorcontinueactivebacterial coresurveillanceand relatedactivities(ABCs);activep0pulation-basedlaboratorysurveillancefor foodbornediseasesandrelatedactivities,(FoodNet);activesurveillanceforrespiratorydiseasesyndromes, developmentof surgecapacitythat canassistinflexibleresponsesto newlyemerginginfectiousdiseasethreats;participationin rapidpopulationsurveys;integratedhepatitissurveillance,includingenhancedsurveillancefor acuteviral hepatitisandforchronicviral hepatitisand liver disease;activesurveillancefor encephalitisof possiblyinfectiousetiology;population-basedsurveillanceof unexplainedeathsand criticalillnessesdueto infectiousdiseasesin previouslyhealthypersons6 monthsto49 years of age; and activitiesdesignedto assess thefeasibilityofincorporatingan assessmentof humangenomicriskfactorsintoacutepublichealthinvestigations.Inaddition,we proposeto continueto: provideappropriatespecimenstoCDC; collaboratewithCDC andotherEIP sitesinthe management,analysis,interpretation,andpublicationof datafromEIPprojects;providetrainingtoworkingpublichealthprofessionalsandstudentsandfellows;participatein anexchangeprogram;act as a resourcefor statesandotherparts of CaliforniawithoutEIPs;andensure reviewof variousEIP projectsbyappropriateinstitutionarleviewboards (IRBs)whenevernecessary. TheCaliforniaEIP will continueto be administeredbythePublicHealthFoundationEnterprises,Inc..
