This project will seek to increase the capacity and capability of the feed program within theKentucky Division of Regulatory Services to enhance the safety of feeds for livestock andcompanion animals. This will increase the ability to track and identify any prohibited ruminantproteins in animal and pet food with the latest technology, determine if non-nutritive elementsexist in ingredients and feeds at levels above either National Research Council listed values orFDA guidelines, and assess the levels of mycotoxin contaminants in animal and pet food. Thesewill be accomplished through adding new detection and analytical equipment, and adding acapable analyst and increased training for three analysts.
Our overall strategy is to strengthen the total capability of the Kentucky feed program to more completely monitor animal and pet foods by increasing analytical capabilities in the laboratory for animal proteins, non-nutritive elements, and mycotoxins.
