The objective of the proposed project is to develop an innovative intervention to disseminate health information to minority underserved populations with limited literacy skills using focus group and survey research methods. We propose to develop a simple easy to read (

Public Health Relevance

/public health statement Breast cancer is the second leading cause of mortality among non-Latino White and African American females, and is the leading cause of mortality among Latinas in LA County. Studies have shown that timely screening may reduce mortality rates of breast cancer. Only 54% of uninsured women had a mammogram in the past 2 years. Thirty nine percent of women in LA County are diagnosed with later stage of invasive breast cancer. African American women have the highest percentage of late stage diagnosis followed by Latino women. In addition, women in Los Angeles County are diagnosed with cervical cancer at rates higher than the national average. Despite mandates to provide linguistically appropriate health information, tailored interventions are limited or unavailable. Poorly understood health information contributes to delays in diagnosis and inappropriate use of healthcare, poor outcomes, and higher healthcare costs. To address these issues, we are proposing to develop, implement and pilot test an innovative intervention that include website, video and radio magazine to enhance the knowledge related to breast cancer and screening among women with limited literacy in SPA 6 in LA County. The ultimate goal is to increase cancer and screening awareness and knowledge, which will increase screening and improve quality of life.
