An award has been made to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln under the direction of Dr. Robert M. Hunt to acquire new cabinets and storage equipment for the fossil mammal collection of the Nebraska State Museum, and to make the data from the collection accessible in an online database searchable by scientists and educators worldwide. The Nebraska State Museum contains a large collection of fossil mammals living in North America over the last 40 million years. These collections reflect the change in the North American ecosystem during that span of time. The database effort will capture information from specimen labels and make them accessible through the worldwide web in a searchable format that can be used by scientists and educators. The museum will continue its extensive outreach programs using these and other fossils in its collection, with special attention to the interests of the Native American community, whose land is the source of many of the specimens.
