To evaluate AVP and ANH response to hypertonic saline (HS) in relation to different stages of the menstrual cycle, nine healthy young women (age 19-25) were studied twice: once during follicular and once during luteal phase. On both occasions subjects were infused with HS, blood samples were obtained and thirst was assessed. Both AVP and thirst levels were highly correlated to osmolality or serum sodium. We conclude that ANH levels are significantly lower both at baseline and after HS during luteal phase.
