APPLICATION TITLE: Nanotechnology for Health Care ConferenceFUNDING OPPORTUNITY: PA-11-310ABSTRACTThe 2012 Nanotechnology for Health Care Conference will be the fourth in a series ofconferences designed to advance the use of nanotechnology in health care. The overall objectiveis to provide a venue for leading researchers to bridge talents in science and engineering innanotechnology with expertise in health care and the medical sciences. The anticipated outcomeis the development of collaborations and the growth of partnerships that will advance the qualityof health care in Arkansas and the nation. The Nanotechnology for Health Care Conference willexamine various applications for nanotechnology including drug delivery, cancer treatment, toxicology, and imaging applications, as well as clinical trial results with nanomedicines. Thespecific objectives of the event will be to highlight research capabilities that exist in Arkansas; toenable researchers to share their results with colleagues working in various subject disciplines; tocommunicate research activities more broadly with peers from outside the state; to build onresearch strengths that exist in Arkansas for toxicology, nanomedicine, and nanotechnology; tounderstand commercialization pathways that enable the transfer of scientific discoveries into themarketplace so they positively influence public health; and to encourage the participation ofwomen, under-represented racial and ethnic minorities, and persons with disabilities in scienceand health care. The conference will feature thirteen world-renowned scientists who will giveplenary presentations. Arkansas researchers will give short presentations as an avenue forcollaborations and interdisciplinary research programs. A number of graduate students and post-docs working at the various Arkansas institutions will also participate and give posterpresentations. Participation is expected to exceed that of preceding conferences with an evenstronger international component. We expect 100 attendees this year including facultyresearchers, scientists, and students from academia, industry, and government organizationswithin the State of Arkansas.

Public Health Relevance

The fourth annual Arkansas Nanotechnology and Healthcare Conference is a four-day gathering that provides opportunities for leading researchers in Arkansas to come together in an effort to bridge statewide talent in science/engineering at the nanoscale with talent in health and medical sciences. The objective is to develop collaborations and grow partnerships to impact the support and quality of healthcare in Arkansas. The focus of this year's conference will be three-fold: research and treatment of various diseased, nanotoxicology, and regenerative medicine. The typical nano health conference attendee is a faculty researcher, scientist, or student from academia, industry, and government organizations within the state of Arkansas. We expect 100 attendees at this year's event with approximately 20 national and international speakers who are leaders in the nanotechnology and nanomedicine arenas.
