The goal of this training program is to support postdoctoral research training for individuals with M.D., D.O. or equivalent degrees who wish to pursue careers as independent investigators in anesthesiology research. Candidates with a Ph.D. working on anesthesia-related research projects are considered only if their predoctoral and postdoctoral research experience indicates exceptional promise. Up to three years of laboratory research training are offered to five individuals annually. There are 12 established research programs. The program faculty consists of 15 investigators with extramural funding (9 from the National Institute of Health and 6 from other extramural sources), 6 faculty associated with the basic science programs, 5 faculty with clinical science programs and 15 associate faculty members from other clinical or basic science departments. One of the strengths of this training program is that the investigators in anesthesia have close ties with established investigators in other departments. The training program is administered by a Steering Committee chaired by the Program Director. This committee is responsible for selection, appointment and assignment of trainees, and will regularly review their progress. The program consists of didactic course work, a focused research experience under the guidance of established investigators, and attendance of seminars, and conferences. The laboratory research is conducted in the labs of Division of Anesthesia Research, and those of the associate faculty. Major institutional resources (e.g., Mass Spectrometry Facility) are available. Trainees will have access to a large number of patients for clinical projects, facilitated by clinical investigators. Mayo has a history of training in medical research and because of the resources provided by this training program, our department is successful in producing independent investigators who are now on the faculty of academic institutions. There is still a great need for well-trained faculty in anesthesia research. Thus, the Department of Anesthesiology, Mayo Foundation, continues to make a strong commitment to training young anesthesiologists in research.
