This proposalseekstoprovidecontinuedsupportfor the New YorkState EmergingInfectionsProgram(NYSEIP). The NewYork State Departmentof Health(NYSDOH), in conjunctionwiththe UniversityofRochester(U of R) andthe NewYork City Departmentof Healthand MentalHygiene(NYCDOHMH), willconductactive,population-basedsurveillanceactivities;appliedpublichealthepidemiologicand laboratoryprojects;and implementandevaluatepreventioninterventiopnrojectsfor emerging infectiousdiseases.TheNYSEIP willcontinueto conductactivelaboratory-basedsurveillancefor the corebacterialorganisms(7FoodNetand 5 ABC), 2 parasiticorganisms,andpertussis.An expansionof the catchmentarea forfoodbomepathogensis proposed,in additiontoexpansionof Streptococcuspneumoniaesurveillanceactivitiesinthe BuffaloMSA. The programalsoproposesto conducta varietyof supplementalprojectsonothernewly emergingor re-emergingpathogens.These includeMRSA, severepneumonia,pediatricinfluenza,unexplainedencephalitis,ehrlichiosis,norovirusesand CJD. Additionally,the NYSEIP will conducta meningococcalvaccineefficacystudy,andparticipatein PulseNetand NARMS projects. The NYSEIP willconductenhancedsurveillanceand investigationof hepatitisA, B, & C. Thisactivitywillbe expandedtoincludethe NYCDHMH. The NYSEIP alsoproposesto conducta groundbreakingprojecttoassessthepopulationattributableriskforgeneticfactorsforinvasivepneumococcaland meningococcadl isease.The NYSEIP has significantexperiencein conductingthe proposedsurveillanceandevaluationactivities.The highlyskilledinvestigatorst,he sophisticatedcapacityof theWadsworthCenterlaboratoryfacilities,andthe cooperativerelationshipsestablishedbetweenthe programand hospitals,laboratories,localhealthdepartments,otherhealthcareprovidersandotherState partners,insuresthatthe NYSEIP hastheinfrastructureneededto conductcoreactivitiesandproposedsupplementalprojects.In addition,the NYSEIPhas thesurgecapacityand flexibilitytorespondquicklytothe emergenceof a newpathogenor evaluateanintervention.
