Connecticut Children's Medical Center will partner with Shriners Hospitals for Children of Springfield, MA to collect clinical data on children and youth with SB. The data collected will be entered into a national registry for evaluation of current clinical practices with the goal of better patient outcomes. SB patients from western and southern New England and eastern New York State will receive care through scientific collaboration.
The Connecticut Children's Medical Center, a free standing, academic children's medical center based in Hartford, CT, will continue its collaboration with the Shriners Hospitals for Children(R) of Springfield, MA to enroll spina bifida patients from both institutions in the national Spina Bifida Registry. Dr. Jeffrey Thomson, Director of the Department of Orthopedics, will continue to serve as the Principal Investigator and join the Centers for Disease Control in a national collaboration to increase the availability of high quality research data to develop national standards for the care of persons with spina bifida. Patients from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and other Atlantic states and Puerto Rico will be enrolled in the registry.
