NERCE: Mass Spec Resource - Stephen Calderwood, M.D.The LTQ XL is a fast scanning tandem mass spectrometer, capable of sequencing several peptidesevery second, allowing rapid characterization and quantification (using isotope labels) of proteins frommicrobes. The instrument also has several intermediate scan modes, allowing for neutral loss analysis ofphosphate groups, as well as some medium full scan resolution modes for charge state assessment. Theinstrument has a higher duty cycle than the LTQ-FT, and a higher sensitivity for lower level peptides.Use of this instrument is prioritized for New England investigators working on NIAID Priority Pathogens, for which rapid identification of proteins and peptides will facilitate basic and applied science of relevant tothe missions of NERCE, such as the identification of pathogen proteins that are potential targets forantimicrobial development. This resource is publicized to NERCE investigators via e-mail, the NERCEWebsite, and direct communication when appropriate.
