The work will help reveal the nature and spatial variation of coloring agents in the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn, which in turn will contribute to our understanding of solar system and planet formation and evolution. High spatial and spectral resolution images of the planets will be obtained with the Air Force Advanced Electro-Optical System telescope, using the telescope's adaptive optics system combined with high spectral resolution instrumentation developed at New Mexico State University.
