The CAREER project seeks to investigate basic phenomena related to surface stress generation due to absorption/adsorption of molecules and its applications to sensors for detection of chemical and biological species. Sensors capable of monitoring surface stress change due to absorption/adsorption of molecules are increasingly being used to detect the presence of chemical and biological species in both gas and liquid environments. This investigation will address the limitations of current state-of-art sensors with the development of a quantitative understanding of surface stress generation and a novel sensing approach based on high resolution interferometry.

The interdisciplinary research undertaken compliments the PI's educational goals by integrating science and engineering research at high school, undergraduate and graduate levels with increased minority involvement and participation. The research and educational activities will have a significant impact on applications relating to health, national security, environment and food safety .
