The US-Finland Workshop on Wireless Networks will be held in the Finland Embassy in Washington DC from May 16 to May 17, 2011. There will be approximately 20 US participants and 20 Finland participants. The objective of this workshop is to bring together experts in the field of wireless networking from the US and Finland, as well as funding agency representatives from the NSF, the Academy of Finland and Tekes, to discuss future research and education collaboration between the two countries. This proposal requests funds to support 10 US participants, which will include researchers at various ranks, and will represent various demographics and races including individuals from under-represented groups. The workshop is expected to result in the formation of a long-term research and education collaboration between US and Finland in the field of wireless networking.

Project Report

was held in the Finland Embassy in Washington DC from May 16 to May 17, 2011. There were approximately 20 US participants and 20 Finland participants. The agenda and workshop participants are available at www.ecse.rpi.edu/US-Finland-Wireless.htm The workshop brought together experts in the field of wireless networking from the US and Finland, to discuss future research and education collaboration between the two countries in the field or wireless networks, and specifically the area of dynamic spectrum sharing technologies. The workshop was also attended by funding agency representatives from the NSF, the Academy of Finland, and Tekes. This grant partially covered the PIs time for organizing this workshop and the travel expenses for the US participants. Space was provided courtesy of the Finnish embassy at no cost to this grant. The US participants included expert researchers in the field of wireless networks at various ranks, demographics and racial origins as well as individuals from under-represented groups in science and engineering, and were selected through an open call. During the workshop, working groups were formed based on research project themes, and ideas for future joint collaborations were developed that leveraged the complementary strengths of US and Finnish researchers. The workshop resulted in the formation of approximately 6 research themes, and helped develop a community and dialogue for international collaboration. The workshop ultimately lead to the formation of a long-term research and education collaboration virtual institute between US and Finland in the field of wireless networking called WiFiUS (www.wifius.org), which was one of the first virtual institutes to be formed under the NSF SAVI framework (www.nsf.gov/news/special_reports/savi/), and to the formation of more than 11 joint research projects between US and Finland in the field of wireless networks and wireless spectrum sharing.
