The award provides funding to help defray the expenses of U.S. participants in "A Conference on Hilbert Function Spaces" that will be held May 20-24, 2013, in Gargnano, Italy, at a facility that belongs to the University of Milan.

This event is intended to furnish a venue in which the relevant international mathematical community is able to assess the "state of the art" in an important and active area of mathematics. The theory of Hilbert function spaces lies at the crossroads of complex analysis and operator theory, with emerging ties to other disciplinary areas (e.g., probability). The participants include most of the recognized world leaders in the area. The conference program provides ample opportunity for graduate students, postdocs, and other young scientists to present their work.

Project Report

was held May 20-24, 2013 in Gargnano, Italy, at a facility owned by the University of Milan. The NSF grant was used for travel reimbursements of some US based participants. The focus of the conference was on Operator Theory, Function theory, and Harmonic Analysis. These topics in pure mathematics are important parts of the foundations of the mathematics necessary for our modern digital devices such as cell phones and imaging devices, but they are also important in many other areas such as optimization and quantum physics. The conference was attended by 85 mathematical researchers from 14 different countries. There were 21 plenary lectures and 31 twenty-minute talks. The plenary talks were given by world leaders in the field. Most talks were based on the presenter’s recent research work. Oftentimes these results had not been published yet. In fact, a conference such as this one, is the first place other researchers become aware of new discoveries. In addition to the talks the conference provided many opportunities for junior and senior researchers to interact and discuss each other’s work. Slides from the talks are available at the conference website at http://hfs2013.dm.unibo.it/. The slides will be useful for participants of the conference as well as for researchers that could not attend the meeting. The grant helped to put the conference together by reimbursing some travel expenses of the US based main speakers. Furthermore, the funds made it possible for nine recent Ph.D. recipients and five graduate students from the US to attend the meeting. Five of these junior participants were women. The individuals supported were affiliated with 18 different universities from all over the US. Participation in this conference should have a direct impact on the future productivity of these young scientists both in teaching and research. Thus it will have its part in supporting the future economic and scientific growth of the US.
