This NSF grant will be used to organize the conference "Algebraic Geometry and Hyperbolic Geometry - New Connections", which will take place June 16 - June 22, 2013 in Cabo Frio (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). The goal of the conference is to bring together researchers in algebraic and hyperbolic geometry in order to explore new connections between the two fields, the latter include: 2-dimensional Cremona group, fundamental groups of Kaehler manifolds, minimal model program, geometrization and geometry of complex ball quotients.

This conference will bring together researchers working in two branches of geometry: Algebraic geometry, which deals with geometry of solution sets of algebraic equations and hyperbolic geometry, which deals with concepts like distances, angles and areas. The goal of the conference is to explore new mutually beneficial connections between the two areas of mathematics. This project will benefit the graduate students and young researchers. It will also promote interaction between the US and Latin American geometers.

Project Report

This grant supported the international conference "Algebraic Geometry and Hyperbolic Geometry --- New Connections,'' which took place in Cabo Frio, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 17th through 21st of 2013. Algebraic and hyperbolic geometry represent two different ways to study geometric objects: The more algebraic ones and the more visual ones. In the recent years, new and fruitful interactions between the two fields have emerged, benefiting both fields in unexpected ways. This conference brought together researchers in algebraic and hyperbolic geometry in order to explore, learn and develop new tools that use results and ideas of one field in order to gain deeper understanding of the other field. In total, forty eight researchers from Brazil, France, Italy, Korea, Poland, United Kingdom and United States, came to the conference. Seventeen research talks, as well as numerous small-group discussions, were held during the conference, detailing cutting-edge techniques, exciting new developments in the two fields of mathematics and illustrating their connections. The unique opportunity presented by the conference in meeting researchers from the other areas, benefited both graduate students, young researchers as well as more senior scientists in algebraic geometry and hyperbolic geometry. It also promoted interaction and scientific collaboration between the US and Latin American geometers.
