This award supports the development and testing of an advanced structural control system on a large-scale benchmark building model in Taipei, Taiwan in conjunction with Taiwan s National Center for Research in Earthquake Engineering (NCREE). The control system will consist of several magnetorheological (MR) dampers that been manufactured and tested at NCREE which are managed by a fuzzy logic control system that has been optimized by a controlled-elitist genetic algorithm. Three U.S. graduate and undergraduate students will actively participate in system development and testing each year for three years. Students will also provide post-experimental data reduction and interpretation. Professors C.H. Loh and Pei-Yang Lin of NCREE will collaborate with the PI and his students in the test.
