This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.The long-term objective of this application is to strengthen the infrastructure in the area of Pharmaceutics. The development of a drug delivery research activity in Pharmaceutics will facilitate the objectives of this proposal which include: a) develop key research areas which will foster an environment of inter and intradisciplinary research among various scientists at the College of Pharmacy. One of the key areas chosen is cancer with special emphasis on lung cancer; b) strengthen the Pharmaceutics division by the hiring of key personnel required to build a critical mass of active researchers; c) provide opportunities for the training of minority scientists in the area of drug formulation and delivery; and d) provide educational support for the community with the various new formulations and drug delivery devices on the market. The successful completion of the above listed objectives will enable the pharmaceutics faculty to build various focus areas in the broad area of controlled drug delivery and enable the division to attract new faculty along with facilitating collaboration with medicinal chemists and pharmacologists at the FAMU College of Pharmacy. Furthermore, the establishment of this center will allow the faculty to generate preliminary data to compete for R01 funding; develop novel inhalation systems for the treatment of lung cancer; and facilitate collaboration with the upcoming FSU medical school and biomedical engineering department.
