This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The long-range goal is to continue to build a research infrastructure at MSU that can provide individual investigators with access to all the tools necessary for conducting nationally and internationally competitive research while building, simultaneously, strong collaborate ties on and off campus. The present Core application seeks to facilitate access to a 'state of the art' facility for experiments proposed under the current RCMI application. We anticipate that, in the future, the facility can help generate additional research resources for individual investigators and MSU. The Histology/Cytology facility will provide equipment and services related to the processing of cells and tissues for histochemical, immunohistochemical and in-situ hybridization procedures as well as their microscopic analyses, computerized image analyses and image processing for documentation and publication. The facility will be equipped to handle processing of cultured cells, organ sections and whole micro-organisms. The facility will serve researchers in the areas of Cardiovascular/Stress, Environmental Toxicology, HIV/AIDS and Neurodisorders/Neurodevelopment research. Thus, need for and use of this facility cuts across traditional discipline boundaries. We anticipate that this interdisciplinary use will encourage faculty interactions and collaborations. The facility will build on the existing histological/ cytological expertise of several faculty members to enable the use of such techniques by individuals new to histology/technology, thereby expanding our research scope. To facilitate this process, and to ensure continuous smooth working of all equipment, a Core Laboratory Director and a laboratory technician will be hired who will work closely with all facility users and direct the daily operations of the Core. This individual will report to the PD. The Core Laboratory Director will work closely with a Core AC. This Committee will be composed of facility users and outside experts with demonstrated experience in several different areas of histology/cytology and will be involved in supervising the establishment and conduction of the Core.
