This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study will enroll subjects diagnosed as having acute or recent HIV-1 infection who are followed at an AIEDRP site for standard clinical care and/or may be participating in a parent AIEDRP protocol, another non-AIEDRP protocol at the site, or elect not to receive treatment but agree to be followed. Objectives include: 1.) To describe the natural history, etiology, pathogenesis, treatment effects and long-term outcomes of acute/early infection in the era of HAART, 2.) To compare long term outcomes of subjects treated with HAART during early infection with the outcomes of subjects treated at timepoints during chronic infection, and 3.) To accrue data that will allow for the subsequent analysis of host-specific and viral factors that may affect disease progression
