This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. To quantify the effects of intermittent simulated altitude exposure on cycling performance, 18 male cyclists engage in the use of a re-breathing device for 15 days. Subjects are randomly assigned to one of two groups; a low constant exposure or progressively increased exposure to simulated altitude. Each days exposure consists of alternating between a re-breathing device and atmospheric air for 6 min and 4 min respectively over 1 hour. Oxygen saturation is monitored with pulse oximeters; and either held constant (90% over 15 days; equivalent altitude equal 3600 m) or progressively reduced (90% on Day 1 to 77% on Day 15; equivalent altitudes equal 3600-6300 m). Hematological and performance tests will be performed 1 day before, 3 and 12 days after the 15 day treatment. Blood characteristics examined include CBC's, reticulocyte count and serum Ferritin. Exercise performance testing will quantify measurements of power, lactate, oxygen consumption, and heart rate.
