This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.The current proposal will assess the short-term and long-term clinical effects of the Atkins diet in 362 obese men and women (80 subjects at Washington Univ.) Participants will be randomized to the Atkins diet (low carbohydrate, unlimited fat and protein) or a conventional USDA diet (high-carbohydrate, low-fat). The effects of each dietary approach on changes in: 1) weight and body composition; 2) metabolic and organ function; and 3)exercise tolerance will be evaluated over a 2 year period for each subject.
