The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Diet-induces weight loss is recommended as the first step in treating obese patients with type 2 diabets mellitus (T2DM). Recently, low-carbohydrate, high-protein/fat (LC-HP/F) diets have gained increasing popularity as a diet therapy for obesity. However, little is known about the metabolic and cardiovascular effects of this diet in patients with T2DM. The major aim of the current proposal is to conduct a randomized, controlled trial to assess the effect of weight reduction with a LC-HP/F compared with a high-carbohydrate, low-fat (HC-LF) diet on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. Forty subjects with T2DM will undergo boy composition analysis, and intravenous glucose tolerance test, cardiovascular assessment, a lipoprotein kinetic study, and a cardiac PET study before and after a 22 week dietary, weight-loss intervention. Subjects will be randomly assigned to either a LC-HP/F or HC-LF diet during intervention.
