This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Patients diagnosed with a life-threatening illness injuring the lungs, called acute lung injury or Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) who have been put on a mechanical ventilator, to help breathe, will be considered for enrollment in the study. The purpose of this study is to study clinical and research specimens in ARDS patients in order to find out more about this condition and to find out whether different groups of ARDS have different diseases or just one disease entity. This study may help us develop better treatment for patients with ARDS in the future.
