This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. In preparation of a prospective clinical study of a novel topical treatment of cold sores a group of 60 subjects with recurrent cold sores will be recruited from the UM Dental School (UMDS) clinics and the UHS/UMHS clinics. All subjects (60) will be enrolled with an active cold sore lesion and during the first clinic visit a specimen of the lesion (swab) will be obtained for culture. Forty patients participate for this visit only (Group B). A group of 20 subjects (Group A) will return for daily visits and participate in evaluating educational materials, calibration of study personnel and study logistics. Viral shedding, course and severity of the lesion and its recurrence will be investigated. No active treatment will be provided. Limited monitoring of the first subsequent recurrence will be pursued for a period of up to 6 month (including one final visit).
