This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The objectives of this pilot study are to characterize the bone loss profile of patients with acute ischemic stroke in the initial post-stroke period and to evaluate for changes in the bone loss profile over time using the population of ischemic stroke patients presenting to the University of Michigan Hospital.A sample of 50 subjects (ischemic stroke patients) will be recurited for the study. At the time of enrollment and then 6-12 weeks following, subjects will have sample of blood and urine taken to check levels of calcuim and vitamins and change in those levels over time.
The aim of the study is to serve as preliminary data for future treatment studies. Few clinical trials have addressed fracture prevention in stroke patients. If low vitamin D levels are identified in a large majority of stroke patients, a treatment trial of vitamin D supplementation may hold promise.'
