This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. To evaluate the effects of a dietary intervention program that focuses primarily on decreasing sugar intake, on insulin sensitivity, weight and body composition parameters, and risk factors for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in overweight Hispanic female adolescents. In addition, this study will evaluate whether an individualized coaching format is more effective in disseminating the nutrition education than the group class format. The results of this initial pilot study will be used to design longer and more detailed studies incorporating dietary and physical activity components for optimal and cost-effective interventions for achieving sustainable healthy weight and risk reduction in this high-risk, understudied population
