This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Our long-term goal is to elucidate the hormonal regulation of meal intake in lean and obese adolescents. In the present project, we will examine the patterns of appetite-regulating hormones in response to meals. Meal tolerance tests will be given to lean and obese Hispanic adolescents 11 to 14 years of age, and blood samples will be taken before, during, and after the meal to measure ghrelin, PYY, adiponectin, GLP-1, and insulin. Subjects will be Latino and will undergo both a small, standardized meal and a larger ad-libitum meal. In this way, we will be able to identify differences in these hormones in lean vs obese adolescents, as well as to how these hormones relate to food intake and satiety.
