This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The overall objective of this proposal is to conduct a randomized controlled study to examine the effects of 16-week exercise and diet interventions on insulin sensitivity, insulin secretion, beta-cell function, body fat distribution and oxidative stress. Results of this study will contribute to he implemention of tailored and culturally appropriate lifestyle interventions for the prevention of obesity realted co-morbidities (i.e. type 2 diabetes and obesity related cancers) in at risk minority youth.
