This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this research is to determine the cause of weight gain associated with taking the antipsychotic medications olanzapine (Zyprexa), quetiapine (Seroquel), and risperidone (Risperdal). As well, we hope to learn if we can predict which people are at risk for having weight gain when taking any of these medicines. We also want to know if these medicines affect blood sugar and lipid levels, which are risk factors for developing heart disease, and if they affect some of the hormones in our bodies that influence weight.
