This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.The purpose of this pilot study is to address the following primary objective: Can antiretroviral medications be found in the breast milk of HIV-infected women who are receiving antiretroviral therapy as part of their care during the period immediately after delivery?Secondary objectives: 1) Compare the metabolism and action of the HIV medicines called protease inhibitors in breast mile to that in blood plasma. 2) Can we find HIV medicines as well as the virus in breast milk at the same time? 3) Describe the relationship between HIV in blood plasma and breast milk. 4) Describe the amount of HIV medicines found in the different parts of breast milk.
