This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Food and Nutrition Board recently adopted what was essentially a new concept of how the human body regulates zinc that resulted in a very major increase in estimates of dietary zinc requirements. The long-term goal of this proposal is to achieve accurate calculations of human zinc requirements - estimated average individual dietary requirements (EARs) and recommended dietary allowances (RDAs). This proposal will specifically examine the interrelationships between various factors affecting whole body zinc homeostasis, and will particularly examine the relationship between the amount of zinc absorbed from the diet and the amount of zinc eliminated in feces and urine.
