This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The overall goal of this proposal is to evaluate a visuomotor task as a model for understanding the physiology of aging in health and sickness. We will compare the findings from healthy subjects with those undergoing estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) and older subjects with Parkinson's disease (PD) and macular degeneration (MD). We evaluate the visuomotor system to gain a detailed understanding of this input-output sensorimotor loop and because deficits in this system can lead to significant morbidity in the elderly from falls and motor vehicle accidents. Also, the neuro-degenerative disorders we are studying have manifestations in the visual and motor systems. We wish to obtain pilot data for an NIH program project grant on these subjects.
