This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. To determine if the ACTH/CORT Response to the 5-HT-2a agonist, m-CPP, is diminished in healthy male volunteers by treatment, at therapeutic levels, with divalproex sodium (Depakote-ER). We hypothesize that both the ACTH and CORT response to m-CPP, known to be mediated by 5-HT-2a receptors, will be diminished by treatment with Depakote-ER. Healthy volunteers are proposed for this study because patients with a psychiatric diagnosis may already have an abnormal ACTH/CORT response to m-CPP Challenge and, if so, it would be difficult to test the proposed hypothesis. Male, as opposed to female, subjects are proposed because it will be difficult to perform the repeat m-CPP Challenge Studies because of the potential effects of the mestrual cycle on the ACTH/CORT responses to m-CPP Challenge.
