This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The overall objective of this project is to determine the affect of systemic alcohol on various airway protective reflexes. We previously studied 10 subjects and demonstrated that systemic alcohol, administered intravenously, affects threshold volumes of water required to trigger pharyngeal reflexive swallow and the pharyngo-UES contractile reflex. During the next reporting period, we aim to determine the affect of systemic alcohol on the pharyngo-glottal closure reflex.
