This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This 3-year study aims to assess the effect of genetic susceptibility and the interaction between genetic susceptibilty and breastfeeding on the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in children. Genotyping will be performed on up to 800 unaffected siblings of children with IBD studied previously in a paired case-control design, with odds ratios and confidence intervals being calculated from the genotypes and collected environmental data. The GCRC is asked to provide space and ancillary support; Nursing is requested to assist with scheduling, blood draws, and sample preparation; the Core Laboratory will extract, dilute, and store DNA; and Biostatistics support is needed to assist with the data analysis.
